Printer or Publisher?

Image of books It has recently come to our attention that the distinction between a printer and a publisher is not quite clear, and we have recently had questions such as:

"So, who makes the books?"; "Who puts the book together?"; and similar questions.

Essentially, a book printer is a business or company who take care of the printing and binding of a book, while a publisher takes care of the pre-printing process.

Since many are not interested in the nitty gritty details of how a book is produced, it's sufficient to say that a traditional publisher takes care of the editing, proofreading, interior and exterior design of a book, amongst many other things.

Prior to going into the publishing business, the idea of publishing a book seemed easy peasy - but we can assure you, it is far from that! So next time you come across a publisher, don't ask them if they can print just one copy of your book 'for the time being' - they may just take offence to such a request!
